Work has started on the $100 million aquatic centre in Adelaide.

A ceremony has been held at Marion to launch construction of the State Aquatic Centre, which is due to finish in late 2010.

The centre will also contain a GP Plus health care centre and a multi-storey car park, as well as pedestrian access to the Marion shopping mall.

Up to 600 jobs will be created during its construction.

The Mayor of Marion Council, Felicity-Ann Lewis, says she is glad work is finally starting after years of delays.

"I think everything that could possibly have threatened this project has," she said.

"So I think the fact that we've come out at the other end of this project with a project is fantastic for the tenacity of South Australia and indeed for local government, state and federal government to see a project we actually believe in get to fruition."

The aquatic centre, scheduled for completion in 2010, will include:

ONE main 50m swimming pool that is 3m deep and has 10 lanes and a boom.

ONE 55m diving/water polo pool with a boom.

SEATING for 4500 people

LEISURE water of 1000 square metres including a learn to swim pool.

"This facility will see Adelaide recognised as Australian swimming's latest destination and also puts us on the world map where aquatic sports are concerned - it's a hugely exciting project," Mr Wright said.

"The concept images and plans I've seen for this project are very impressive and certainly world class.

"We'll soon be seeing a fantastic new sport and health hub for South Australians that sends a strong message that we continuing to defy the global downturn and our state remains open for business."

The GP Plus Health Care Centre will offer a wide range of health services, including dental, heath and counselling for young people, early childhood development services and health services for older people.

Candetti Constructions was selected by the State Government as design and construction contractor for the project.
